Product Description

The JustBoom Raspberry Pi DAC HAT is a plug and play, high resolution, digital-to-analog converter for the Raspberry Pi. Simply stack the plug-and-play add on board (HAT) onto your Raspberry Pi A+, B+, 2B or the new 3B and it will be ready to use immediately.

We’ve designed the JustBoom / Raspberry Pi DAC HAT to be simple to install and use. With no soldering required and all the mounting hardware already provided this product is suitable for absolute beginners and seasoned professionals alike. Just connect your DAC HAT to a set of powered speakers or an audio amplifier and you can be up and running quickly, enjoying flawless high quality audio playback within minutes of unboxing this Raspberry Pi HAT. We also include an optional IR receiver to allow remote control operation of your Raspberry Pi DAC.

Includes a 384kHz/32 bit DAC chip with hardware volume mixing as well as a 138mW headphone amplifier. Outputs are line level over RCA and headphone amplified over 3.5mm jack cable. The HAT uses the I2S interface for its audio input which reduces CPU load on the Raspberry Pi compared to USB solutions. It is also powered directly from the GPIO header so no extra cables or power supplies are required to connect to the Raspberry Pi. All of the Raspberry Pi GPIO pins are still accessible on the DAC HAT for easy customisation of your project – add additional sensors, buttons, LEDs, rotary encoders or anything your heart desires.

4 reviews for JustBoom DAC HAT for the Raspberry Pi

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

I bought this board for my Raspberry Pi 2 running on OpenELEC. The installation was incredibly straightforward; just screw on the DAC HAT, hook it up to your stereo using RCA cables, and select the DAC as your audio output from the settings in Kodi and you’re set. The difference is incredible and is noticeable on all movies and tv shows ranging from the smaller files to the high quality ones (although the biggest difference is on those with higher quality audio tracks).

A constant problem that I had with my setup before were movies whose audio was unusually quiet. In order to hear dialogue you had to crack the stereo up, which in turn resulted in an annoying hiss which made some movies unwatchable. With the JustBoom DAC HAT, most audio seems slightly louder but more importantly you can crack the stereo without getting any hiss. I would highly recommend this product.

  2. Rated 5 out of 5

Tried this board with both Kodi and Volumio, and very pleased with the results from each. Lovely crisp and clean audio in both cases and set-up is simple for each.

Also love the available secondary 40-pin header, allowing stacking and GPIO pass-through for other projects (as long as there’s no assignment clash of course). Using it to connect up a few buttons and a rotary encoder for on-box controls and so far it’s doing well. Still optimising things, but there’s no issue with the DAC board getting in the way of anything.

  3. Rated 5 out of 5

Puchashed this Jusboom Dac-Hat after I wasn’t happy with my HiFi Berry Dac Plus headphone edition, volume output directly from the sound card itself. The headphone amplifier on the Justboom Dac Hat made a huge difference on the amount of great sound coming from this incredible sounding Dac Hat. All genres of music received a huge boost in detail and clarity. My own Mp3 collection of Hard Rock and Metal never sounded so good, no matter what I was listening to it through, headphones, powered speakers. I simply just could not stop the Rock. A simple to install, affordable high fidelity device that has made me a music lover once again. With the Justboom music player software and access to unlimited internet radio stations in all genres, controlled with my smartphone, Justboom-a-licious

  4. Rated 5 out of 5

I was looking for something to add to my Raspberry Pi B+ model that was collecting dust. I wanted a specific headphone listening station. The sound went from flat and dull to spacious and enveloping. There were sounds that I had never heard before on some songs. I use it exclusively for FLAC files, most being 16/44.1, but some are 24/192. Absolutely love it! My next step is to add battery power so it is more portable.
